Surkanda Devi Temple: A Sacred Himalayan Retreat

Perched at an elevation of 2,757 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas,  Surkanda Devi Temple is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in Uttarakhand. This sacred temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is surrounded by dense forests and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, including Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Chaukhamba peaks.

Located near the hill stations of  Dhanaulti and Mussoorie, Surkanda Devi attracts devotees and trekkers alike. The temple is reached after a scenic 2.5 km uphill trek from the village of  Kaddukhal, which takes you through a serene trail lined with rhododendrons and oaks. As you ascend, the fresh mountain air and sweeping vistas provide an invigorating and peaceful experience.

The legend of Surkanda Devi is rooted in the ancient tale of Goddess Sati, whose body parts fell to Earth during Lord Shiva’s Tandava. It is believed that her head fell at this very spot, making it a significant pilgrimage site for worshippers of the goddess.
